Which of the five files is the photo?
Instagram does not store one copy of your picture. It stores several — a square crop for the grid, a small one for previews, a couple of intermediate sizes for different screens, and the original as uploaded. They all sit in the same place, under names that look nearly identical.
A downloader that takes the first one it finds, or the one the page happened to display, hands you a crop. It looks right in a thumbnail and disappoints the moment you open it properly — and by then the post may be gone.

Do I get the full-size original?
Yes, and it is the whole point of the page. On a typical post the original is 1152×1536 at around 229 KB, sitting beside a square crop at 1080×1080 and 67 KB — the same picture with two-thirds of it thrown away. Tools that grab whichever file the page happened to display hand you the second one.
Does a carousel give me every slide?
Every one, numbered Photo 1 to Photo N in the order the author arranged them. If a slide is a video it stays in place as Video 6 between Photo 5 and Photo 7, rather than being dropped or pushed to the end.
Why not just right-click and save?
Because the browser saves what the page is showing, which is a display copy sized for your screen. On a phone there is no right-click at all, and a long press on a carousel saves the slide you are looking at, one at a time.
What format do the files come in?
JPEG, which is what Instagram stores. Converting to PNG on the way out would produce a much larger file containing the same compressed picture, so nothing here offers it.
Do stories and private accounts work?
Neither. Instagram serves both only to a logged-in account, and this site keeps none. Public posts are the whole scope — that is a deliberate limit, not a gap waiting to be filled.
